CONFIRMATION SESSIONS

The Confirmation Sessions play an important role in preparing the candidates for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Candidates, parents, and sponsors are required to attend the following two sessions.

Confirmation Orientation November 5
Chastity Speaker February/ March TBD

APPLICATION

An application for the Sacrament of Confirmation. You are required an application form and bring it to the Confirmation Orientation. There is a $25 Sacrament fee which must be submitted with the application. This fee will go towards speaker sessions, extra materials and the retreat. If your child was not baptized at St. Michael a copy of your child’s baptismal certificate must also be submitted with the application. The baptismal certificate will be returned to you.

SERVICE HOURS

Each candidate is required to use his or her gifts and talents to help those in need. At least two hours of service must be for the parish and at least two hours of service must be for the community for the year. A total of 8 hours or more of service per quarter (appoximately one hour per week) is required. As you think of where you may want to share your time and talents, also think of which works of mercy you will be fulfilling. You will need to complete a service log. The community can be your neighborhood or in another city. The point is to reach out in different aspects and not do all your service in just one area.

CONFIRMATION NAME

As a candidate for the celebration of the sacrament of Confirmation, you have two options concerning the choice of a Confirmation name.

  1. Stay with your present baptismal name (your regular first or middle name) if it is the name of a recognized saint. To stay with your baptismal name would demonstrate that you feel there has been a continual growth in your faith and you now wish to make this formal through Confirmation. It expresses the relationship that exists between Baptism and Confirmation.
  2. Choose a saint’s name that would symbolize a new beginning in your life and a connection with that particular saint. This option is most common, showing a renewed commitment to your faith. Your commitment would be symbolized with the taking of a new name to show that you are in some ways now a new person.

The particular saint’s name chosen would represent the direction you feel your faith life is going, or would represent a strength or attribute you feel you need. You should choose a saint’s name, not because of the attractiveness of the name, but because of the attractiveness of the Christian life that the person led. Research several different saints and choose the one which best fits your life.

Whether you are choosing to keep your present name or to take a new name, you will need to write a detailed report about your choice. Guidelines for the report will be given to you in class.

SPONSOR

Each candidate will choose a sponsor to help them with their faith journey and to act as a witness to their commitment to Christ and the Catholic Church. The sponsor must be 16 or older, either gender, who is a Confirmed, practicing Catholic. The sponsor can not be a parent. Click here for more on Choosing a Sponsor.

CANDIDATE LETTER

One of the ways candidates will be assessed in the preparation of the Sacrament will be through a formal letter written to our pastor, Father Bill. The purpose of the letter is for the candidate to convey his/her knowledge of and desire to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. Your religion teacher will give the specifics of the letter at a later time. They typed letter will be due April 23, 2009.

RETREAT

Each candidate is expected to attend a Confirmation retreat. The retreat is scheduled for April 21, 2009. The cost of the retreat is included in the Sacrament fee.

The Confirmation retreat, for all 8th grade students only, will be held at the Felician Motherhouse located on Schoolcraft between Newburgh and Levan Roads. Due to the number of students we have, there will be two retreat times. Students with last names starting A – L will attend the morning session (9:15 AM - 2:15 AM) and students with last names starting M– Z will attend the retreat in the afternoon session (1:15 PM - 6:15 PM). Light snacks and lunch or dinner will be provided. There is an overlap in time so that all students can celebrate Mass together. Mass will be in the main chapel. Dress attire is required. No tennis shoes, jeans, T-shirts, shorts or capris. Socks or nylons must be worn.

DROP OFF

Go in the I-96 service drive entrance. Enter off Schoolcraft and let students off at the chapel straight ahead. Please arrive at your designated time, either 9:15 a.m. or 1:15 p.m.

FOR PICK UP

Parents arrive to the center at 2:15 p.m. or 6:15 p.m. and wait in the Montessori parking lot (located to the right of the driveway leading from Newburgh Rd.). Students from the morning retreat will be coming out of Mass so please be patient if Mass should run over a bit.
