The Holy Family welcomed the Magi on Epiphany. A beautiful tradition that has been inspired by this event is the New Year’s blessing of the home.
On the Feast of the Epiphany, January 5-6, 2019, Father will bless chalk at each Mass. The chalk will be found at the doors exiting the church. Please take the chalk home and use the prayer below to bless your home.
All: Make the sign of the cross.
Head of Household: Peace be to this house and to all who dwell here, in the name of the Lord.
All: Blessed be God forever.
Reader: In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things come to be through him, and without him nothing came to be…. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father’s only Son, full of grace and truth.
Use the blessed chalk to write the following above the entrance door(s) of your house: (each letter or number could be written by a different member of the household).
Meaning of the above: 20 and 19 represent the year. C, M, B can represent the three magi Casper, Melchior, and Balthasar or Christus Mansionem Benedicat (Latin for “May Christ Bless this House.”)
All: Lord God of heaven and earth, you revealed your only-begotten Son to every nation by the guidance of a star. Bless this house and all who inhabit it. Fill us with the light of Christ that our concern for others may reflect your love. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen
Once the chalk is blessed it becomes a sacramental. Please dispose of the chalk reverently by burying it or dissolving it in water and pouring the water outside on the ground.
