The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) was established in 1929 by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. The society is one of the nation's premier organizations created to recognize outstanding middle level school students. It acknowleges those students who have demonstrated excellence in the four areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character.
The National Junior Honor Society at St. Michael School is made up of 7th and 8th grade students who meet the criteria for exemplifying good scholarship, (a grade point of 3.0 and above), good citizenship, (conduct grade of a B or above), good leadership, service, and character.
New prospective candidates fill out their applications at the first meeting. They will be working on obtaining needed signatures on their forms. Parents are able to sign on the signature portions of the application, if the corresponding adults are not available. Once report card grades have been turned in, the advisory committee reviews applications. Students will receive their letters of acceptance with their report cards.
An induction ceremony is held annually. Typically, each year the ceremony rotates between the school mass so our students can witness the ceremony, and an evening ceremony. Students will process into church wearing gowns, and will partake in the ceremony. The former NJHS president from last year addresses the students.
NJHS members will be asked to provide service to our school. Students are requested to provide 10 hours of service throughout the year, 8 of which will most likely be tutoring or assisting a teacher, and the remaining 2 hours can be made up in additional tutoring hours, or any other service activity that benefits the school. Eighth grade students may tutor a younger student in grades 1-3 during the lunch hour, or a fellow 7th or 8th grader since their lunch periods coincide. Seventh grade students can tutor before or after school, and Mrs. Stempin will help in arranging times. Confirmation hours may not be substituted for NJHS service hours. New members will be assigned a student following the induction ceremony.
