BATTLE OF THE BOOKS

CALLING ALL 4TH, 5TH AND 6TH GRADE STUDENTS AND PARENTS

You are invited to participate in St. Michael’s Battle of the Books. Battle of the Books is a program available to 4th, 5th and 6th grade students.  This program involves students forming teams of 6, reading pre-selected titles and competing against other teams for prizes in a “quiz bowl” type contest. This program is an exciting way to promote reading and help children discover new literature!

Here’s how the program works:

  • Interested students need to begin forming teams of friends, classmates, scout-mates, etc. If needed, I can help you put together a team. There is room for all interested students to participate in this program. There should be six on each team with an adult coach. EACH STUDENT WHO WISHES TO PARTICIPATE MUST SEND IN A REGISTRATION FORM. ALSO, ALL COACHES MUST COMPLETE THE “FAMILY OF GOD” TRAINING
  • Each team must also recruit a COACH or TEAM MANAGER to read the selected titles and help the team prepare for the final quiz bowl. A coach can be a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, neighbor, AS LONG AS THEY COMPLETE THE “FAMILY OF GOD” TRAINING.
  • Return the registration form to Inger Griffin. Each coach will be contacted once they are registered.
  • Teams will meet in the gym during lunchtime. The books will be passed out and the program will officially begin. Coaches need not be present at this time.
  • Each coach can attend an informational meeting just before the January Parent Group Meeting. Rules for Battle of the Books will be explained and any questions you might have can be clarified.
  • Once the program kicks off, the children will be reading their books and working with teammates and coaches to prepare themselves to answer questions about the books. The coach will organize occasional team meetings to discuss the books with the children, talk about strategies for answering questions and otherwise help them prepare for the quiz bowl.
  • All teams should bring a blanket, pencils, and the team books for check in to the quiz bowl.

Please feel free to contact Inger Griffin at mgrif8@aol.com. If you have any questions, need help filling out a team, or want to help coach a team even though your student isn’t interested, please feel free to contact me.

HAPPY READING!!
